KOLKATA: The FM’s budget proposal to convert the Indian school of Mines at Dhanbad into a full fledged Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) will boost top quality education and research in the country’s geology and mining sector. ISM’s conversion into an IIT has been in discussion for more than four years. It also fulfils a promise made by Modi in the run up to the Lok Sabha elections in 2014.

From its inception in 1926 when the institution was set up to impart mining education, it has graduated into a leading technical institution offering programs like B.Tech, Dual Degree, Integrated M.Sc., Integrated M.Sc.Tech, M.Tech, M.Phil, M.Sc, M.Sc. Tech. and MBA.

The Indian School of Mines was formally opened on December 9, 1926, by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India to address the need for trained manpower related to mining activities in mining and applied geology. In 1967 it was granted the status of a deemed to be university under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956.
