In yet another incident of train robbery in Uttar Pradesh, passengers of the Chennai-bound Tamil Nadu Express were targeted between

Mathura and Agra late on Thursday night with robbers thrashing passengers and taking away jewellery and cash worth around Rs.15 lakh.

Chain pulled

The incident happened around 1-30 a.m. when around half-a-dozen armed robbers struck an AC compartment of the train as soon as it left Mathura station. It is believed that some robbers had boarded the train at Delhi itself who pulled the chain after the train left Mathura. As the train stopped, some of their accomplishes entered the coach and started thrashing passengers at gunpoint. They snatched jewellery and cash before fleeing, police sources said.

Passengers called up police control room and informed about the incident. Police and GRP reached the spot and after registering their complaint the train left for its onward journey.

One passenger who was badly injured was sent to Delhi for treatment. A joint police and GRP team raided nearby villages and arrested one suspect, police sources said. Further investigation is on.

Significantly, there has been a spurt in robbery cases on trains in the State in recent months. While the Bagh Express that run between Kolkata and Kathgodam was targeted near Bareilly a fortnight ago, another train was targeted near Moradabad a few days ago.
