The divider of over eight metres on Begumpet flyover was removed to facilitate smooth flow of traffic from Rasoolpura side to Greenlands as space on one lane of the flyover was shrunk due to ongoing Metro Rail work.
The traffic police took up the issue with Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and in a joint operation, they decided to take steps to ensure smooth traffic flow within the available carriageway.
“The Hyderabad Metro Rail authorities had dug up the road adjacent to the flyover near Varun Motors showroom for laying foundation for a pier. With the mud base abutting the flyover bridge collapsing, we had to extend the barricade onto the flyover bridge,” the traffic police said.
With the barricade’s extension jutting out into the carriageway, the double lane space on one side of the flyover got shrunk to a single lane. The traffic flow on the flyover is usually very high since it’s the only direct link for vehicles coming from Begumpet to Somajiguda, besides connecting Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
Remedial action
As a result, traffic was piling up even during the non-peak hours between Rasoolpura and Begumpet forcing the traffic police and the municipal corporation to take up remedial action.
“We had no option but to remove a part of the divider on the flyover to facilitate free flow of vehicles,” the traffic police, wishing to remain anonymous, said.
