After taking the first reactor of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project to its maximum generation capacity of 1,000 MWe, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board has granted permission for conducting the ‘Hot Run’ in the second reactor on Saturday (February 28).
In a statement, Site Director of KKNPP R.S. Sundar said Unit 1 of KKNPP is generating 1,000 MWe power and so far it has generated 462 crore units. Unit 2 of KKNPP has got clearance for the conduct of ‘Hot Run’ from Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).
During the test related to ‘Hot Run,’ steam flow path and steam release devices will be tested and only the release of steam (water vapour) to the atmosphere will take place for a very short period of 2 - 3 minutes.
“During the testing, the ambient noise level is likely to go up marginally. Hence it is hereby informed that these tests will be conducted only during day time and there is no need for any fear. No test is being conducted at KKNPP, which is harmful to the environment and the public,” Mr. Sundar said. The tests are likely to commence from Saturday (February 28) for a period of one week and again after about a month these tests will be repeated, he said.
