8-year-old raped, youth arrested

KOLKATA: A minor girl from Jadavpur was allegedly raped when she was on her way to buy her dinner. The incident was reported around 10pm on Thursday.
The survivor, an eight-year-old residing in the Jhilmil area in Jadavpur, has been admitted to Bangur Hospital in a serious condition.
The accused, who was identified as Somnath Das, was arrested by the Jadavpur police within hours. He was produced at the Alipore Court on Friday.
According to police, the girl, daughter of a peon employed by a leading city lawyer, was kidnapped by Das from a lonely stretch of road in the Jadavpur area and dragged to an open field. She was then raped.
When the girl did not return home after a long time, her family began searching for her. They found her lying in one corner of the field.
A number of locals caught hold of Das and thrashed him before handing him over to the police. The cops are investigating if there was another person involved in the crime.
“We are going to get the victim’s statement recorded before a magistrate at the earliest. We plan to prepare the chargesheet at the earliest in order to send out a strong message so that such incidents are not repeated,” said a top Lalbazar officer.
