3-year-old boy dies of H1N1

A three-year-old boy died of swine flu at the Kokilaben Ambani hospital in Andheri on Thursday, making it the 18th death in the city. While H1N1 virus has killed one Mumbaikar, seventeen patients who were shifted to city hospitals also succumbed to it. The disease has affected 125 people in the rest of the state this year.

As many as six deaths and 144 new cases were reported from across the state in the last 24 hours, of which 58 cases are from Mumbai. Doctors fear that cases will only soar with the sudden nip in the air, which makes the climate favourable for the virus.

The victim, a resident of Bhayander, was first admitted to the Children’s Hospital in Malad. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to the Kokilaben Ambani hospital. Doctors said that he developed acute respiratory distress syndrome, which led to his death.

According to the epidemiologist Dr Pardeep Awate, three patients below 15 years of age were among the 125 who succumbed to the disease in the state. “All three minor patients had co-morbid conditions, one of which even included thalassemia,” he added. MMB
