Alice Reti-Steel is included in the exhibition which is open to the public from March 2 to April 26.
It is part of the 32nd ARTEXPRESS, showcasing the best works of art completed by students from government and non-government schools across NSW as part of last year’s HSC.
Of the 219 works on selected for exhibits statewide (from almost 400 submitted for consideration), 64 have been selected for inclusion in The Armory exhibition, making it the largest of the year’s series of eight exhibitions.
Among these are Alice Reti-Steel’s sculpture Sour Light Crude.
Alice’s statement about Sour Light Crude reads: “In a world still so heavily dependent upon fossil fuels, environmental damage is a price we will continue to pay.
“The 2010 Gulf of Mexico spill continues to affect that region, hence the oil pool in my sculpture mimics the shape of the United States portion of the North American landmass.
“This sculpture required me to experiment with materials and methods I had not previously used (including alginate, silicone, bitumen and modelling compounds), a process I found enjoyable and absorbing in spite of the darkness of the subject matter.”
Her sculpture will later be shown at the McGlade Gallery at the Australian Catholic University.
