Female Buyers Dominate 2015 International Festival Season

This article is more than 9 years old.

Many of 2015’s biggest international live music festivals have seen the bulk of ticket sales on the secondary market come from buyers within that country, according to European ticket reseller Ticketbis. From Lollapalooza to Rock in Rio, it appears that domestic ticket sales have dominated the secondary market as festival season quickly approaches. Credit it to the women, too, as much of that nationalistic demand has been brought on by female buyers. Female buyers outnumber male ticket buyers for eight of the top 11 selling festivals on Ticketbis.

Beginning with Rock in Rio Brazil, Ticketbis has seen 93.9 percent of its ticket sales to the festival come from Brazilian natives, with just 2 percent of ticket buyers hailing from Argentina. Lollapalooza Brazil has seen a similar trend. 97.9 percent of tickets have been bought in Brazil. Argentina has accounted for just 1.43% of total sales. Rock in Rio Brazil will be held over two weekends from September 18-27 while Lollapalooza Brazil takes place on March 28 and 29 in Sao Paolo.

Much like its Brazilian counterpart, Lollapalooza Argentina has seen the majority of ticket sales derive from Argentinian festivalgoers. 72.5 percent of all tickets were bought in Argentina, with 15.6 percent coming from Brazil. Other countries that fans purchased tickets in include Mexico, Peru and Uruguay. Taking place on March 21 and 22, Lollapalooza Argentina will be headlined by Jack White, Pharrell Williams and EDM juggernauts Calvin Harris and Skrillex.

Other festivals that have generated significant national ticket demand are Vina del Mar, Quilmes Rock and Tomorrowland Brazil. The Latin America Vina del Mar festival has seen 93.8 percent of its total sales come from Chile, where the concert is set to be held this year. The Argentinian-based Quilmes Rock festival boasts an 87.7 percent total ticket gross in its native country. The first-ever to be held in South America, Tomorrowland Brazil has seen 67.4 percent of tickets bought in Brazil.

Those doing most of the ticket purchasing are females aged 18-44. With Ticketbis providing an extensive list of each upcoming festival this year, it’s the women who will be flocking to them as the weather gets warmer. Coachella, Life in Color, Vina del Mar, both Lollapalooza festivals and all three Rock in Rio festivals have had the majority of secondary ticket s bought by females in that age bracket.

Over 100 festivals worldwide will welcome music’s biggest artists to their respective stages this year. With tickets to many of the most notable festivals being bought by domestic female buyers, 2015 will be one of the biggest years in the history of live music.
