THE renowned poet Thomas Moore is said to have written his famous verse "Oft In The Stilly Night" at a dinner held at Sir William Palliser's fabulous Georgian mansion, Rathfarnham House.

Diners demanded Moore pen a poem and to persuade the reluctant scribe, they bundled him into a room on his own and locked the door.

Moore wasn't let out until he had completed the script for "Oft". The house later became Loreto Abbey, a girl's school for more than 200 years until it closed in the 1990s.

Located in the former grounds behind the still striking Georgian Manse is the upmarket Woodstock House apartment scheme in Dublin 14 - named in fact after the next house that Palliser (an inventor who conceived armour piercing shells) occupied in the area.

Woodstock House is a modern two storey block which includes just four large apartments. Number 256 is a top floor two bedroom home which spans 700 sq ft - the size of a terrace house.

The accommodation includes an entrance hall, a living room/dining room, a kitchen, and a main bathroom. Unusually, the master bedroom comes with its own ensuite shower room. Both the bedrooms are double sized, also unusual for an apartment.

This dwelling also comes with its own private car parking space and has access to well landscaped communal gardens. Another benefit is an elevated west facing balcony.

The scheme is entranced off Grange Road making it accessible to Rathfarnham Village. This complex is spoiled for park walks in proximity being close to St Enda's Park which includes the Pearse Museum.

It's also within reach of Rathfarnham Castle Park and its popular children's playground as well as Marlay Park and Bushy Park. Two bedroom apartments like this one are popular among older locals seeking to trade down.

The property at Woodstock House is on open view tomorrow from 11.30am to midday and Sherry FitzGerald (01) 4951111 seeks €295,000.
