Frequent Flyer: Barry Jones

HOTEL

Hotel Concordia in Venice is hard to beat: you don't see the canals and harbour, but the views of San Marco and its domes, and the piazza and campanile are incomparable. There are outstanding places to eat within 100 metres, some of the best in the piazza. There are concerts in the chapel next door and the Doge's Palace has outstanding galleries. Parking won't be a problem. See hotelconcordia.com.

AIRLINES

I have had 60 years of excellent service from Qantas and I have complete confidence in its safety reputation and helpful cabin crew. Emirates offers good value, as does Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific and (generally) BA. In past decades I have had some hair-raising experiences including two forced landings but not on the carriers mentioned above. In China, a refrigerator was strapped into the seat behind me.

RESORT

I am not really a resort person. I travel to learn more about the world. I have had some wonderful stays in Iguazu, a place of transcendental beauty, with 257 cataracts and astounding birds and jungle. The Argentinian and Brazilian sides, barely a kilometre apart, offer completely different experiences. Don't miss either. The sound of Iguazu Falls and the sight of myriad birds is heart-stopping – so check against the possibility of cardiac arrest.

LUGGAGE

I have some luggage somewhere, simple, light, inexpensive and pullable. Brands? I forget.

ACCESSORY

My major accessory is a camera. I aspire towards being a painter but I have compromised by doing some serious photography and have been very prolific. David Hockney is one of the very few artists who have mastered both painting and photography and he has been a major influence. Perhaps it's not too late for me?

NEXT ADVENTURE

I am currently obsessed with Europe. I have visited all the continents, including Antarctica but I can't get enough of Europe. This year I'll be in the Loire Valley and Paris and later from Tehran to Budapest by train.

Join Barry Jones on a private, fully-escorted, 21-day train journey from Tehran to Budapest, travelling through Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. Priced from $19,167 per person twin share. Phone 1800 630 343. See travelrite.com.au.
