The Turkish foreign ministry confirmed Friday that Syrian opposition fighters will take part in a train-and-equip program in Turkey beginning March 1. Though Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgic declined to give details, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told Anadolu Agency earlier this month that around 2,000 Syrian fighters will participate in the program.
The program’s aim is to strengthen the opposition against both Daesh extremists and the Assad regime.
Turkey and the US on February 19th signed a deal to initiate the train-and-equip program with the goal of transforming the political situation in Syria.
