How did Phatte Tak Nachna (Dolly Ki Doli) happen?

I got a call from Wajid (of composer duo Sajid-Wajid). He said, ‘Vastaad, ek gaana karne ka hai.’ And I said, ‘Okay bhai’. It was as simple as that and when I found out it was Arbaaz (Khan) bhai’s song, I was even more excited. For me, working with Sajid-Wajid is like working at home.
They make it a point to make me feel comfortable and, at the same time very special, so all things happened easily. Every recording is unique for me. This one too had its own special moments. One of the best things was that we finished recording this song in just one-and-a-half hour. The vibe is just right and fabulous, and all of us were on fire when we were recording it. I would like to believe it reflects in the video too. Sonakshi has done a great job in the song and manages to carry its spirit on her shoulders.
Tell us about your journey into Bollywood.

I was born and brought up in Delhi. My dad comes from a theatre background. He’s famous for playing Ram on stage and also sang in the Ram-Leela. If there is any power in my voice, I attribute it to him. Contrary to popular belief, I am not a trained singer. I was doing shows from the time I was five years old. When dad noticed that there was more to it than a hobby, he quit acting and came to Mumbai with me. I was 11 years old back then. It was Tabassumji who noticed me and introduced me to Kalyanji
bhai (of Kalyanji-Anandji fame). I was with his academy for more than two years and then joined his show Little Wonders. He made me the lead singer in the kiddie group. My dad believed it was time to sing in movies. Aadesh Shrivastava heard me singing at the Filmfare Awards during a section for Little Wonders in which Aditya Narayan sang alongside me. Aadeshji gave me a break in a duet with Udit Narayanji. For the next two years, I mostly did background scores. I was entering adolescence and my voice was changing. I was doing shows with Sridevi and Kumar Sanu and must have traveled to the US a dozen times.

Who is your favourite music director and singer?

How can I ever answer that! I am working with all these amazing people. All my co-singers are my friends. All of them have innate talent and I like to work with all of them. As for pop stars, my current favourite is Beyonce. She’s such a strong woman. I love the power in her track Single Ladies. She has managed to balance out her life and career with such ease. She is a great singer and actress and looks amazing. Now, she has become a good mother and wife. She pulls off everything she dreams of doing. In India, Lataji is my idol. She is a temple of music.
What is your take on the new crop of singers and who among them are your favourites
?
It would be unfair to pick one name as they all are genuinely talented and have their own special quality.
You are doing very few playback songs. Are you being choosy?

I become choosy only when it comes to the lyrics. When I am not comfortable with the lyrics of a song, I don’t say ‘yes’ to it.
Tell us about your future projects.

There are many upcoming projects but it is Dil Dhadakne Do’s song that I am most excited about.
