PAS information chief Datuk Mahfuz Omar said today he would leave for Australia on Sunday to meet Sirul Azhar Umar, the former police commando corporal convicted of murdering Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu.

He will be accompanied by Sirul's mother and younger sister as well as his officer and lawyer.

However, he denied knowledge of a Whatsapp message claiming that he was giving a press conference with Sirul's mother at the PAS headquarters today.

"Who is spreading the message? I don't know anything (about it)?" he told The Malaysian Insider.

Sirul was to have held a PAS-organised teleconference with the Malaysian media on Monday at 11.30am but it did not materialise after numerous failed attempts by Mahfuz to reach him.

Mahfuz only managed to get in touch with Sirul about two hours later.

Sirul and Lance Corporal Azilah Hadri were convicted for killing Altantuya and sentenced to death by the Federal Court on January 13.

Sirul did not attend the proceeding as he was in Australia.

Sirul, currently detained in an immigration detention centre in Sydney, reportedly claimed that he was acting under orders to murder Altantuya.

News portal Malaysiakini had quoted him as saying that several Australian media organisations had requested for an interview with him, but he has yet to decide on it. – February 27, 2015.
