The Enforcement Directorate has raided the premises of meat exporter Moin Qureshi in connection with its hawala and foreign exchange violation case against him. Qureshi was also a regular visitor at former CBI director Ranjit Sinha’s residence, and dna report in September last year had shown that the two met at least 90 times.

This is the first raid at Qureshi’s place, although the IT department had taped the BBM conversations of Qureshi with a host of high-flying politicians, businessmen and celebrities in early 2013.

The ED has asked the income tax department for more information on Qureshi, as indicated in its appraisal report. But sources reveal that the income tax sleuths have been reluctant to share more information with the ED. Till now, the only information shared by the IT department with ED pertains to French architect Jean Louis Denoit who had designed Qureshi’s palatial house worth several crores in Delhi’s tony Chattarpur locality. The information shred runs into roughly 100 pages.

It is believed that Qureshi made multiple payments to the French architect through firms located in Dubai. The firms were allegedly owned by the brother of Qureshi’s Pakistani origin wife. The French architect was employed by Qureshi to design the house on his wife Nasreen’s insistence.

ED sources confirm to having recovered several “incriminating documents and hard-drives” that point to money laundering by Qureshi. It is still unclear why Qureshi would still keep this information with himself after having known for so long that he was under the lens of multiple investigating agencies. The ED is yet to clarify on the kind of documentary evidence it has recovered from Qureshi’s extravagant mansion. The ED has also identified certain luxury furnishings in Qureshi’s home and designer wear worth thousands of dollars in Nasreen’s wardrobe. ED sources reveal that they had been monitoring the payments to a host of luxury stores across the US and European cities by Nasreen Qureshi. The payments for many of the clothes and furnishings were allegedly made via hawala through companies in Dubai and Hong Kong.

This is also for the second time that Moin Qureshi has been quizzed by any investigating agency. The IT department had interrogated him just a few days back on February 15. ED sources reveal that they will be questioning Qureshi again “in the near future”.
