Director Manish Gupta is pleased with the acclaim his last release Rahasya garnered. Having first established himself as a writer with Sarkar, he later forayed into direction with The Stoneman Murders. As he moves onto his next project,
Sinhasan, we catch up with the
writer-director.
Did you expect such a positive reaction to Rahasya? The film was made in a controlled budget and we spent a modest amount on the promotional campaign.
So vis-à-vis the return on investment,
Rahasya is a success. What makes me happy is that even a month after release, it’s still playing in cinemas alongside bigger-budgeted movies.
READ:Director Manish Gupta mistaken for a theatre usherWhat measures did you take to keep the cost in check? I story boarded the entire film. Each and every shot was sketched out in detail, so no time was wasted on set. All actors and technicians were clear about how we were going to shoot. That’s how we wrapped up the shoot in 45 days. I have strictly followed the storyboarding discipline from
The Stoneman Murders.Between writing and directing, what do you prefer? Direction because it gives you absolute control. Except
Sarkar, all other films written by me shaped up differently as compared to the way I’d written them.
What’s your next film about? Sinhasan is a modern-day retelling of
Emperor Aurangzeb’s ambition for the throne that led him to armed conflict against his father,
Shah Jahan. I’ve set the story in a corporate environment.
