 'Bhagavad Gita' in school curriculum?

Reportedly, Haryana government is toying with the idea to include Bhagavad Gita in school curriculum. The newly elected BJP government has asked School Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) to give suggestions on the same.

According to Indian Express report, the recommendations by the SCERT will be fine-printed by educational consultative committee, headed by education activist Dina Nath Batra. Batra recently hit the headlines after he forced Penguin Books India to withdraw all published copies of Wendy Doniger's book, The Hindus: An Alternative History.

"We have referred the matter to the SCERT for their perusal. It is up to them to propose from which level Gita can be introduced at school level",T C Gupta, director general, higher education, said when prodded about this move.

Reportedly, only hitch is that many of the students are not very proficient in Sanskrit. Government has asked SCERT to chalk out a way for the issue so that they can easily read 'Sanskrit shlokas'. Most likely, SCERT may provide students with Hindi, English translation of the Bhagavad Gita 'shlokas'.
