Corporator renames roads in locality after father and uncle; residents are not amused at all

The corporator of Govindarajnagar has renamed two roads — one after his father and the other after an uncle.

The corporator in question is BJP’s Mohan Kumar of Ward - 104 (Govindarajnagar). Thanks to him, Govindarajnagar 1st Main Road is to be called Late M Devadas Road and Govindarajnagar 4th Main Road as Late Narasimhaswamy Road. The former is named after Kumar’s father and the latter after an uncle. The public display of affection for his kith and kin has snowballed into a controversy with over 200 residents signing a petition protesting against the move.

Naturally, Kumar’s party — the BJP — has chosen to turn a blind eye while the Congress is passionately arguing on behalf of the residents stating that local sentiment should be respected. Congress leader B N Manjunath Reddy had, in a letter to the BBMP commissioner last November, warned against the renaming of the roads. He stated that residents wanted to name Late B S Narasimhaswamy Road after the temple there. He recommended Pojamma Tai Devasthan Road.

Mayor N Shanthakumari rejected the allegations and recommended that they go ahead with the corporator’s proposal. Meanwhile, the residents have approached authorities in protest. “It would be acceptable if the roads are named after leaders or martyrs, but we have no idea what the contributions of these two gentlemen are,” the residents, led by G Ramachandra, Munipoojappa and Poornachandra, alleged.

In a letter addressed to the Mayor, the residents said that there were a lot of people who had given away their properties for schools and have fought for the development of the area but their names had been ignored. They demanded removal of the name boards.

When contacted, Mohan Kumar maintained that both his relatives had immensely contributed towards the betterment of the society.
