City police arrested a 26-year-old quack who cheated people claiming to be a surgeon
Chennai: The city police on Wednesday arrested a 26-year-old quack who cheated people claiming to be a surgeon in a major private hospital in the city. He had identified himself as a surgeon in his social networking profiles like Facebook, Twitter and had forged an identity card of the private hospital to use has his display picture on WhatsApp.
Investigations revealed that the accused, D. Shyam Sunder, a native of Pollachi, was actually a class 12 dropout and is involved in cheating cases in his native place too.
The Tiruvanmyur police arrested him based on a complaint by his roommate, Balasundaram, whom he had cheated of Rs 60,000. Shyam Sunder had initially taken the money as a loan around six months ago when they started staying together at a room in Thiruvallur Nagar in Tiruvanmiyur.
He promised to return the money or facilitate a surgery in the hospital near Kathipara. However, when Balasundaram started demanding the money back, the accused evaded him and went into hiding for days, after which Balasundaram approached the police.
“The accused roams around well dressed and would easily pass off as a professional. Further, he had also updated all his social profiles as a surgeon which aided him,” an investigation official said. The Tiruvanmyur police registered a case of cheating and remanded the accused in judicial custody. The police are investigating further to find if he was involved in similar cases.
