Fazilka DC’s teen son hangs himself

The body was taken to the family’s native village in Bagha Purana, near Moga, for last rites.

Sumer Singh Brar, the teenaged son of Fazilka Deputy Commissioner Manjit Singh Brar, reportedly committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan at his Sector 8 residence last night.

A student of Class XI at St John’s School in Sector 26, Sumer hanged himself with the collar of the family’s pet dog which slept in his room. He left no suicide note.

Sumer was to appear in a practical exam on Wednesday, but his teachers told police that he was good in studies. The family told police that they had no idea why Sumer took the drastic step.

The incident came to light when the family servant Sohan Singh saw Sumer hanging in his toom around 8.30 am. According to the post mortem report, Sumer died between midnight and 1 am.

The body was taken to the family’s native village in Bagha Purana, near Moga, for last rites.

Sumer’s father had earlier served as the Director of Information Technology and Public Relations in the Chandigarh Administration.
A neighbour said that Sumer, his sister Kudrat, who is a law student, and their mother, along with Sohan Singh, stayed in the house. Manjit Singh used to visit his family on the weekends.

On Tuesday, Sumer, Kudrat, and Sohan Singh were at home while Manjit Singh was in Fazilka and his wife was in Goa attending a family function.

Sumer returned home around 8.30 pm and told Sohan that he had already eaten. He went to his room after about an hour. Sumer had a routine to take their pet dog for a morning walk.

“The dog used to sleep in Sumer’s room which was latched from inside. In the morning, Sumer did not come out and the dog kept barking. The servant knocked on the door many times, but got to response. He then looked in from a window and saw Sumer hanging,” said the neighbour.

The servant called Kudrat, who fainted at the sight of his brother hanging from the ceiling fan. Sohan then called neighbours and the police was informed. Sumer was rushed to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 where he was declared dead on arrival.

Assistant SP (Central) Guriqbal Singh Sidhu said, “The family has not given any possible reason for Sumer’s suicide, and foul play is ruled out. The body did not have any external injury marks.”

Inspector Malkit Singh, SHO of the Sector 3 police station, said, “We spoke to his teachers and friends, none of them raised any doubts. The teachers said that he was good in studies and the friends said that he was a happy person. His phone record is being scrutinised.”
