National Science Day celebrated in Jorhat

Jorhat: The CSIR-North East Institute of Science & Technology (NEIST) celebrated National Science Day, 2015, at Dr J N Baruah auditorium here on Wednesday.
Participating in the programme, Harsh K Gupta, member, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board and president, Geological Society of India, delivered a lecture titled “Living with earthquakes in northeast India”.
Gupta spoke on various aspects of earthquakes and their hazards, earthquake data analysis, seismic moment rate release, magnitude distribution of earthquakes, earthquake forecast, early earthquake warning system and so on.
He focused particularly on the northeast and the Himalayan region. He said the first 14 years of the 21st century have witnessed heavy loss of human life; more than in the whole of the 20th century.
Gupta elaborated on medium-term earthquake forecast based on precursory swarms and quiescence periods for predicting the probability of earthquakes. He spoke on early warning system and said an early warning of even 20 seconds prior to the occurrence of an earthquake can save millions.
Kankan Bhattacharyya, member of the research council of CSIR-NEIST, spoke on the work of Nobel laureate C V Raman.
D Ramaiah, director, CSIR-NEIST, said National Science Day is observed every year to not only commemorate the discovery of Raman Effect, but to disseminate scientific knowledge across the country. He reiterated the ‘Make in India’ mantra of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged stakeholders to launch a ‘Make in CSIR-NEIST’ initiative.
A large number of guests, eminent personalities from Jorhat district and members of the CSIR-NEIST fraternity, attended the programme.
R Bezbaruah, an official of CSIR-NEIST, said National Science Day was observed on Wednesday as February 28 is a holiday.
