Guwahati:
Acting on a tip off by Gajraj Intelligence, security forces nabbed one of the most-wanted National Democratic Front of Boroland-Songbijit (NDFB-S) militant, Habel Basumatary, from the Kachugaon area of Kokrajhar district on Tuesday night.
Habel, 22, is believed to have been extorting money from timber smugglers and locals.
“He was a key supplier of arms and ammunition to NDFB-S for the last two years.
He was also wanted in connection with last year’s massacre of Adivasis at Bharatpur. One 7.65mm pistol and ammunition were seized from him,” said Lt. Col.
Suneet Newton, PRO (defence).
Habel is believed to have been maintaining communication with the top leaders of NDFB-S.
In a separate operation by the Army’s
Red Horns Division and
Assam Police, two
National Santhal Liberation Army (NSLA) militants were nabbed from the Gossaigaon area of Kokrajhar district. “They have been identified as
Anthony Hembrom and Badal Hembrom; both are 22. Anthony is a
close aide of the outfit’s
commander Lakhiram,” the PRO added.
