RPF inspector gets life for youth’s murder
CHINSURAH: A Railway Potection Force (RPF) inspector was sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday for the murder of a youth on July 9, 1998. Rakesh Kumar was found guilty of pushing 21-year-old Narottam Dutt off the ladies compartment of a local train.
Narottam, studying in a Kolkata institute, was returning to Bagati in Hooghy’s Mogra on board the Howrah-Burdwan Mainline Up local. When the train stopped at Bandel station around 10.50pm, Narottam got off the general compartment to drink water.
He ended up climbing onto the ladies compartment when the train started moving.
The judge said that Narottam tried reasoning with Kumar, then an RPF sub inspector on duty, but he stopped Narottam from getting off at the next station. He pushed the student off the train between Adisattagram and Mogra. Narottam died on July 25 that year, after a 16-day-battle for his life.
