Members of a Canadian Special Operations regiment have been ordered to leave Diffa, a town in Niger that has come under threat from Islamist extremist group Boko Haram.
The soldiers have been moved to Agadez, N’djamena, and Niamey, which is the capital of Niger, CTV’s Mercedes Stephenson reported Wednesday. Canada already had soldiers in all of these areas.
The Canadian Forces members were in Diffa as part of Exercise Flintlock, an annual military operation designed to help African militaries co-operate and build the capacity to fight terrorism.
The soldiers were moved after an evaluation of the security situation in Diffa. The training will continue, however slightly fewer people are being trained this year because many of the Nigerien forces are on the front lines fighting Boko Haram.
