AHMEDABAD: It was touch and go for the city crime branch's Special Operations Group (SOG). Had it been a little late, the two accused might have flown to Mumbai.
According to SOG officials, a team led by ACP B C Solanki and inspector B D Jadeja had received information that Clifford Anthony D'Costa, a resident of Mira Road, Mumbai, was to come on an Emirates flight from Dubai with two others, including a woman.
The group was carrying a large consignment of gold which was to be handed over to another party at the airport.
"When D'Costa came out along with others and put the handbags in a car, the SOG team apprehended him along with Sapna Ishwar, a resident of Mumbai, and Virendrasingh Jaglan, a resident of Panipat, Haryana," said an SOG official. "The two receivers were Jaiveersingh Shamshersingh and Kapil Jagdevsingh, both residents of Delhi. The cab driver who drove the accused from Delhi was also booked."
The accused had multiple handbags from which police found nine boxes containing 60 gold bars of kg each of Istanbul Gold Refinery (IGR) make along with INR 2,700, Dirham 2,500 and US dollars 71. The accused confessed that they had used the green channel at the airport to avoid checking by the customs department.
