Stone-thrower held for death of commuter

KALYAN: The Kalyan GRP on Monday arrested Ratan Marwadi (45) for the death of commuter Darshana Pawar last week. She had lost her life after she was hit by a stone while returning home on a train between Ambernath and Badlapur railway stations, TOI had first reported. She fell onto the tracks, unconscious, and though help reached her within 30 minutes, she could not be saved due to the alleged obstinacy of a GRP constable.
Marwadi, police said, was involved in many cases of stone-pelting on railway commuters, and was even jailed in one case. The Ambernath resident, after committing the crime, escaped to his daughter’s residence in Vani, Nashik, where he used the stolen sim card of the victim. He had left his daughter’s residence when the police initially went there. But the police later laid a trap at Shilphata, Kalyan, where they nabbed him on Monday night.
The police are also suspecting the role of Marwadi’s two sons, who have cases against them.
Darshana’s family alleged that she was not saved as the constable transferred her from one hospital to another, and did not allow a Good Samaritan, Madhu Birmole, to shift her to a private hospital.
“We are happy the police arrested the person who killed my sister. But we want action against those who delayed treatment and did not save my sister,” said Sachin Pawar, the victim’s older brother. “The police should take action against the constable who reached the spot late and refused to hand over my sister to Birmole,” added Sachin.
Sachin’s wife Yogita said, “It was a case of sheer negligence. The police did not conduct any investigation and registered an accidental death report. Three days later, we found her empty bag at the spot and realized it was a case of robbery. Then only did the police file robbery and murder cases and started a probe.” Yogita added, “We only want those who are responsible to be punished.”
