: Alleging the involvement of a State Minister in the suicide of an official of the Department of Agricultural Engineering in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president E.V.K.S. Elangovan has sought a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the incident.

“Since the case involves a State Minister, we are seeking the probe to be conducted by the CBI,’’ Elangovan said, addressing reporters at the party office.

The police are investigating the incident in which S. Muthukumarasamy, an Executive Engineer in the Department of Agricultural Engineering, committed suicide on Friday by falling in front of a speeding train.

While the preliminary enquiries by the police revealed that the official took the step under pressure, department sources said he was an honest officer and had recently finalised the list of four persons to be appointed as drivers in his department after obtaining the seniority list from the District Employment Office.

The officer is learnt to have received calls from a “highly influential person” who wanted him to consider another “list of selected candidates," which the officer objected to, despite being threatened to be placed under suspension. Asked for his comments about Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's absence at the ongoing Lok Sabha session in Delhi, Mr. Elangovan referred to the vacation taken by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during the erstwhile BJP regime and said, "availing leave from work is the right of every individual.’’
