Slew of events mark Jayalalithaa’s birthday

Party men cut cake, gift jewellery to new-borns

Hoardings at street corners and vantage points, newspaper advertisements, cake cutting, prayers, and charity at children’s and old age homes by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadre in Coimbatore marked the party’s General Secretary Jayalalithaa’s 67{+t}{+h}birthday on Tuesday. A few senior leaders of the party also gifted jewellery to new-borns.

According to sources, party men led by Urban District Secretary P. Rajkumar, who is also the Coimbatore Mayor, and Rural District Secretary S.P. Velumani, who is also the Minister for Municipal Administration, organised prayers at 67 temples, starting with the Siddhi Vinayagar Temple in Gandhipuram.

They visited Thandumariamman Temple, Koniamman Temple, Lakshmi Narasimhar Temple, St. Antony’s Church, Puliakulam and also the Sangli Peer Darghah on Trichy Road to offer prayers.

At the party office, leaders led by Mr. Rajkumar cut a 67-kg cake to mark her birthday. In the evening, the party men pulled the golden temple car of the Marudhamalai Temple. Mr. Rajkumar and other leaders also gifted gold chain weighing a sovereign each to two baby girls and two rings weighing half-a-sovereign each to two baby boys, who were born at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

Earlier, former Mayor S.M. Velusami also gifted gold jewellery to infants who were born there.

The party had also organised blood donation campaign, distribution of food and dhoti to old age homes, sapling plantation drives and a few other programmes till March 5.

A number of programmes were organised in various parts of The Nilgiris on Tuesday to mark the birthday of Jayalalithaa. The Nilgiris Collector P.Sankar planted a sapling at Kundahchappa village near here. A photo exhibition was organised at the Government Botanical Garden here to highlight the achievements of the government over the past three years. Special pujas were performed in some temples.
