Nikhat Zareen, a first-year student of Bachelor of Arts in AV College, was adjudged ‘best boxer’ in the All India inter-university boxing championship in Jalandhar on Monday.

The 18-year-old former world junior champion, born in Nizamabad and now in city to train at the Lal Bahadur Stadium boxing hall, won the gold in the 51 kg category defeating Ritu 3-0 in the final.

“I am delighted and I tell you the competition was tough,” she exclaimed.

Mentored by Emani Chiranjeevi, a veteran Sports Authority of India (SAI) coach, Nikhat says that this gold was also special for the simple reason that she had to miss the recent National Games in Kerala. It was because two warring boxing groups fighting for legitimacy were barred from participation. “Nikhat is a sure prospect for a medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics given her abundance of talent, grit and determination,” predicted the coach.
