: Indiscriminate dumping of waste, including plastic and polythene bags, into the Aamayizhanjan canal has raised health concerns.

People living by the side of the canal have to bear the stench and mosquito bites.

In the absence of a proper waste management system, residents, restaurants and roadside eatery owners, are dumping waste into the canal.

Breeding ground

A resident at Thakaraparambu said failure to de-silt the canal had resulted in breeding of mosquitoes. “It is not just the situation with Aamayizhanjan canal.

Most of the drains, some of them passing through the heart of the city, have not been de-silted for several years,” he said.

Cleaning up

R. Harikumar, councillor, Thampanoor, said the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project had been entrusted with the work of cleaning up the canal.

However, encroachment and lack of cooperation from other agencies had hampered the work. He said the canal was choked with waste at several points at Thampanoor and East Fort.
