NAGPUR: Vishal Sunwaye, an MNS activist from Bangladesh locality, lost his right hand thumb in a clash at Maratha Chowk in Bangladesh locality of Pachpaoli on Tuesday morning. The incident led to agitation at Pachpaoli police station where the local residents staged a protest against cops for allowing illegal activities.
It’s learnt that Sunwaye wanted Indaal Pardhi to discontinue his gambling activities along the railway tracks.
Sunwaye was keen to ensure Indaal stopped conducting gambling which was leading to socio-economic decline in the locality. Residents claimed that Indaal had been openly boasting of pocketing police with monetary favours. “Indaal has been operating gambling den and also owns a bootlegging business in nexus with police,” claimed Mahadeo, a resident, who was also among the ones who gheraoed the police station.
Enraged by the intervention, Indaal and his accomplices turned their heat on Sunwaye and his friends. Sunwaye’s family members and friends rushed to Indaal’s residence at Bangladesh and manhandled his pregnant wife. They later tried to launch a second attack on Indaal when both groups came to blows, it was learnt.
Sunwaye lost his thumb in the fight which fell off after getting severed by the stroke of a sharp weapon. Police were learnt to have taken the severed thumb to hospital along with an injured Sunwaye. Tension erupted after the incident with a strong mob marching to the police station. Some of the local residents were also learnt to have triggered a ruckus at Mayo hospital where Sunwaye was rushed.
A section of local MNS workers, under central Nagpur vice-president Aditya Durugkar, started targeting police for allowing illegal activities in the slums of Bangladesh and Naik talao locality. They also vented anger against police for keeping the outpost at Bangladesh closed.
Senior inspector of Pachpaoli police station RD Nikam stated that Indaal and his accomplices were rounded up immediately after the incident and slapped with charges of attempt to murder. “We are also in the process of registering a counter offence against Sunwaye for trying to rough up Indaal’s family, especially his expecting wife which could have claimed her life,” he said.
