Azamgarh to get sugar mill
LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s constituency Azamgarh got its share of sweetness on Tuesday when the government made a budgetary provision of Rs 250 crore for a sugar mill in Sathiyaon locality of the district. It was only a fortnight ago when Mulayam visited Azamgarh, more than seven months after he won the parliamentary election from the seat.
The mill, which will come up in the state sector, will largely attend to the needs of cane growers in the districts of east UP.
With a crushing capacity of 3,500 tonnes of cane per day, the mill will have a power cogeneration plant and a distillery unit as well.
The Akhilesh Yadav government also attempted to assuage the apprehensions of cane growers by making a budgetary provision of Rs 1,152 crore for sugar mills to pay arrears to farmers. The issue has been turning out to be an embarrassing one for the state government with the opposition taking every opportunity to attack the state government for not taking care of cane growers of UP, the second largest cane producing state in the country.
The government also made a budgetary provision of Rs 442 crore for reimbursing cane societies and as society commission. The measure is part of the subsidy the state government has given to cane industries, which have been facing a tough time because of the fall in the prices of sugar.
