AMRAVATI: Eighty-two-year-old Shankarrao Vidhale, a resident of Kathora Naka here, who died on February 22, can still see the world, thanks to the wish he had made to donate his eyes posthumously. Shankarrao had come in contact with Deesha Group and Deesha Eye Bank’s Swapnil Gawande, who has been creating awareness among people about eye and organ donation and motivating them to make a resolve in this direction through the campaign ‘ Roshani Zindagi Mein’, three years ago at an awareness camp.

There he had expressed his wish to donate his eyes after his death. He had told his relatives Yogesh Dandale and Anup Vidhale accordingly and when his end came on Sunday, the twosome did not waste a minute to honour the old man’s wish. There couldn’t be a greater satisfaction than putting light into the eyes of the lightless. Deesha Eye Bank’s Dr Manish Totey and Dr Sunil Sharma removed the eyeballs, separated the corneas and sent them to Jalna for transplanting them on two blind persons there.
Shankarrao Vidhale did not stop here. He had also wished for donating his body to a hospital. And honouring that wish also, his relatives donated his body to the local Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Memorial Medical College.
“Shankarrao has set a noble example before the society. We are thankful to him and his family. If people emulate his example, the blind in the society would be able to see this beautiful world,” said Swapnil Gawande while speaking to TOI.
