PANAJI: Dempo have confirmed that star midfielder Romeo Fernandes has been loaned to top Brazilian club Clube Atletico Paranaense for the rest of the season.
It is for the first time that an Indian footballer will be representing a top-flight Brazilian club, and should things go as planned, he will be the first Indian footballer to be sold to a foreign club.
"The arrangement is that he will travel to Brazil in the next couple of days and stay with them till the end of the (Brazilian) season on June 30, 2015.
Should Atletico Paranaense be keen on taking the deal forward, they will pay Dempo a substantial amount for part of his rights," said club chairman Shrinivas Dempo.
Dempo did not elaborate on the "substantial" amount they will receive if the Brazilian club, four-time domestic champions, decided to make the deal permanent. Those in the know said the amount could be between Rs 50 to Rs 60 lakh. The club will take care of Romeo's wages - roughly Rs 2.10 lakh a month - besides his training and accommodation.
"I am really happy that I have been selected," said the 21-year-old Romeo, a bit overwhelmed.
"This is like a dream come true for me. I am thankful to all those who made this dream come true for me and I am sure that more doors will now open for other players to play abroad," said the midfielder.
Clube Atletico Paranaense showed more than passing interest in the midfielder after seeing his terrific performance for FC Goa in the Indian Super League (ISL). Romeo won three Man-of-the-Match awards and scored four goals in the tournament, and it was FC Goa coach Zico's testimony to the club that clinched the deal.
Much of Romeo's future was in the hands of Dempo coach Arthur Papas and the Australian said it was not a difficult decision to allow Romeo to travel to Brazil midway into the season.
