Irked over erratic water supply, women from Sangampatti in Ottapidaram taluk thronged the Collectorate here on Monday, seeking the district administration’s immediate intervention.

In the petition submitted to the Collector, panchayat president R. Jaya Ragupathy stated that for the past one month there was no water supply in their village and the residents were facing hardship to meet everyday needs.

Under Vallanad combined water supply scheme, water was supplied to the village for a long time. But it was stopped abruptly after panchayat president of Muramban, the neighbouring village, diverted the water to fill three 5,000-litre tanks installed at his hamlet, she claimed.

The panchayat president had illegally tapped the water supply after connecting pipelines to the three tanks. Despite representing the issue with Block Development Officer of Ottapidaram and TWAD Board officials, no effort was made to restore water supply. Vijayalakshmi, one of the villagers, said that they had no other alternative but to draw water from Manthaikulam where cattle wallowed. Hence, a separate water supply line must be laid to their village to solve the problem, she said.
