Italy on Monday celebrated after the country’s Milena Canonero took home her fourth Oscar Sunday night for best achievement in costume design for The Grand Budapest Hotel.
It was her third collaboration with director Wes Anderson after The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and The Darjeeling Limited.

Twitter was abuzz with congratulations for the Turin-born costume designer from Italians watching the program live on Sky Italia’s Sky Cinema Oscar channel. And Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi tweeted: “Congratulations to Milena Canonero, elegance, grace and talent at the Oscars.”
Culture minister Dario Franceschini also tweeted: “The (fourth!) Oscar for Best Costume Design to Milena Canonero is recognition of a great artist and more proof of the vitality of Italian cinema.” All major newspapers, from Repubblica to Il Messaggero to Corriere Della Serra, led with stories of Canonero’s fourth win.

Canonero has won four times out of nine nominations. She took home her first win in 1976 for Barry Lyndon, then in 1982 for Chariots of Fire and in 2007 for Marie Antoinette.

Canonero has become a go-to costume designer for some of Hollywood’s top films. Her first job was in 1971 as costume designer for A Clockwork Orange after meeting director Stanley Kubrick on the set of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Many of her works can be seen in the traveling Stanely Kubrick Museum, including the iconic twins’ blue dresses from The Shining.
Canonero was also buzzed about on Twitter from viewers around the world, praising her for her humble acceptance speech in tribute to Anderson, and for her own noteworthy personal style. She is reportedly working currently on a project with Prada. She collaborated with the fashion house on many of the Grand Budapest costumes.
