Happy tidings

GOOD things come in pairs. Over the weekend when Mukul Deora tied the knot with Nitasha Thapar in a string of ceremonies stretching from a party at The Tote in Mumbai to the grand Thapar reception in Delhi, there was more good news in the offing. Nitasha’s sibling Ayesha, who married Google’s Nikesh Arora last year in the presence of Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, is expecting. Both Nikesh and Ayesha have been married before, while Nikesh has a daughter from his first marriage.

Being a good sport?

RAJ Kundra, who recently stepped down as the founding CEO of the professional fighting league, says he is disappointed with the lack of interest and support for non-cricketing sports in India. He obviously speaks from plenty of first-hand experience. Kundra will however continue to be involved with his ‘baby’ as he calls the sport, which will move out of the country where it was launched with much fan fare and some star power from Sanjay Dutt before he was incarcerated.

As the league travels to the US and Dubai (where the sport is bigger, he says), Kundra tells us that his disillusionment with corporate sponsorship for other sports notwithstanding, he now plans to put talented Indian boxers on the international map. “It is part of my CSR and also because I am passionate about all kinds of sports,” he tells this diarist, adding that whether it is badminton or kabaddi or hockey, the formats are all struggling to remain viable. As for the other great love of his life – he responds with a terse “No Comments” on anything to do with IPL or Rajasthan Royals. Now that was one short-lived season of romance.

By the way…

TO celebrate 40 years of Jiggs Kalra’s food writing, his son Zorawar threw a bash where guests included the cricketer Robin Uthappa. Uthappa (29) was all ears for the 91-year-old Czar of Indian cooking when they discussed all things food. We wonder however, which recipe got the finger up.

Mumbai toss

THE other day we told you about Nayantara Kilachand’s efforts to revive her hip website, which, among other things included attempts to attract VCs and investors with an expansion plan. The wait seems to have got the better of some of her trusted lieutenants, three former journalists, who have launched a site that would remind users of where they earned much of their coolth. Meanwhile, Ms Kilachand remains resolutely unavailable for comments. Curioser and curioser, as they say.

Tailpiece

THIS is a different kind of “revelation” that I-T commissioner and artist Neena Singh is talking about. Her 10th solo show, titled Revelations, has been inspired by Kahlil Gibran, Rumi and the Panch Mahabhuta, and exudes the serenity that her paintings are known for. A far cry from the rough and tumble of the professional world she has been a part of, no doubt.

PS: We are quite amused with reports of a certain pharmaceutical baron who spends most of his time in London these days. This gentleman, who owns a sprawling apartment in Juhu, has a retinue of domestic helps including a driver on the standby, paid them well and ensured that they are at his service whenever he comes down to the city. Given that he and his elderly parents visit the country only once in two years or so, it is quite a generous arrangement by every stretch of imagination. Only that, the smart domestic helps have been gainfully employed elsewhere in his absence, often zipping around in his Merc and partying at his apartment, while making a grand show of loyalty every time he calls or visits.
