Sports roundup: James 34th in pro debut

Bath's Augusta James, except for a four-hole stretch on the final nine holes of her first pro tournament, had herself a very good debut.

James was in contention in Sunday's final round of the $100,000 Gateway Classic when she birded three of the first four holes to reach 6-under par for the tournament.

James was as high as fourth place before a four-hole stretch from the 10 to 13th hole cost her a top 10 finish. She lost six shots to par over those four holes, slipped back to 1-over par for the tournament and eventually settled for a even-par 216 total for the 54-hole tournament.

James final round 75 left her in a tie for 34th at the Symetra Tour stop at Meza, Ariz.

Sixteen-year-old amateur Hannah O'Sullivan from Chandler, Ariz., became the youngest winner of a Symetra Tour event. She finished at 201, 15-under and with a four-shot victory margin.

James will play on the tour's second stop at Beaumont, Calif., beginning Friday.

The St. Lawrence Vikings enter the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association women's basketball playoffs on a huge roll.

Saturday in Kingston, the Vikes chalked up their 10th straight win with a 72-54 thumping of the Centennial Colts.

Leading by eight at halftime, the host club recorded 14 steals (by seven different players) in the second half.

Lacey Knox and Hannah Koposhynska paced the offence with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

The Vikings, who placed first in the OCAA East with a 15-1 mark, earn a bye directly into the league provincial championship tournament, which takes place at Centennial College, March 5-7.

The Vikings' men's club enter post-season play having lost three straight, this after winning 10 in a row.

The Vikes dropped a 77-69 decision to the visiting Centennial Colts on Saturday and with it a chance to host an OCAA crossover qualifier against Hamilton's Redeemer College Royals.

Down four points at halftime, St. Lawrence briefly took the lead in the third quarter before fading down the stretch.

Andrew Dawkins scored 21 points for the losers, who finished in fifth spot in the OCAA East.

Jenny Wright netted 18 points and teammates Liz Boag and Abby Dixon dropped in 13 points apiece in Queen's Golden Gaels' 81-65 victory over the Toronto Blues in Saturday's Ontario University Athletics regular-season finale at Toronto.

The Gaels roared out to a 27-13 first-quarter lead and were up 28 points at the break.

Queen's opens the OUA playoffs Wednesday night.

The male Gaels were not so fortunate as their season concluded with a 87-79 loss to the Blues, who claimed the final playoff berth.

Sukhpreet Singh drained 20 points in a losing cause while Kingston boys Greg Faulkner and Tanner Graham scored 18 and 15 points, respectively.

Following a see-saw third quarter that produced seven lead changes, the Blues pulled away in the final quarter.

The Gaels finished the season with an unspectacular mark of 5-12.

• The No. 6-ranked Queen's Golden Gaels surrendered two late goals, and ultimately their season, to the Laurier Hawks, who nipped the host Gaels 3-2 to sweep the best-of-three OUA women's hockey quarter-final series.

Danielle Girard and Danielle Bishoff scored for Queen's, which outshot the visiting Blues 29-27.
