Lark Quarry Dinosaur Trackways site near Winton to be revamped
A $700,000 project is about to begin at a site in outback Queensland where thousands of dinosaur footprints are preserved.
The work will include repairs and a refurbishment of visitor facilities at the Dinosaur Trackways at the Lark Quarry Conservation Park near Winton.
The fossilised footprints at the site are believed to be about 95 million years old.
Winton Mayor Butch Lenton said the site was closed and expected to reopen in June when the work was complete.
"As long as there are no delays - you would love to think we could get a rain delay but unfortunately the rain seems a little bit further away than we think at the moment," he said.
"But if we can keep it on track for a June opening, that would be fantastic.
"We have to get this work going ahead so it is safe for everyone to visit. It will end up a bit of a restructure for the viewing area which will make that better too.
"The wall where you walk into the entrance of the track is unsafe, so it has to be taken down and then a new viewing area and platform in that area has got to be built.
"So I think people will be interested in the changes and I think it will increase some visitation."
