Awareness camp

Madurai Sivakasi Nadars Pioneer Meenakshi Women’s College collaborated with TNSDC and ICTACT EDI-Chennai to organise ‘Entrepreneurship awareness camp’ on February 9. Senthil Kumar, CEO, Kalvi Institute, spoke on ‘Skill and development of entrepreneurs’ and T. Jothi Murugan, Director, Department of Management Studies, KLN College of Engineering, spoke on ‘Development of women entrepreneurs.’

Pest control mechanisms

In commemoration of golden jubilee celebrations of Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore, and Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology, Udaipur, organised the 36th annual conference and national symposium on ‘Challenges and management approaches for crop diseases of national importance – status and prospects’ from February 12 to 14.

K. Ramasamy, Vice-Chancellor, TNAU, laid emphasis on developing suitable pest control mechanisms that would benefit farmers in protecting their crops.

P. K. Chakrabarty, Adjunct Professor, ICAR, New Delhi, said that even though self- sufficiency in production of foodgrains and cereals was necessary, more than 22 to 25 per cent of losses were incurred due to pests and diseases.

About 200 scientists from across the country participated.

‘E-CREST’15’

A technical symposium, ‘E-CREST’15,’ was organised at Fatima Michael College of Engineering and Technology. N. Janardhan of the Ministry of Communication, explained the importance of competitive examinations and the preparation process. He stressed on the importance of a strong base in Mathematics to get through the examinations. More than 60 students from various colleges took part in this programme. Paper presentation sessions and technical events took place.

Sports Day

Saraswathi Narayanan College celebrated Sports Day recently. T. Narayanan, Member, Management Committee, was present. V. Valveemaraja, Regional Senior Manager, Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority, the chief guest, said that the State government had allotted Rs. 210 crore for the promotion of sports activities, a four-fold increase over the last year. Medals, prizes and certificates were distributed to winners and Vadivel Murugan of I M.A. History was adjudged the college champion.

College Day

Sports Day and College Day were celebrated at Vickram College of Engineering on February 10. Chairman M.K.S. Sreenivasan was present. At the college day celebrations, Mr. Sreenivasan said that employment opportunities had increased in all branches of engineering. He urged the students to become employable by acquiring additional skills. S. Raja, ‘pattimandram’ speaker, the chief guest, spoke on essential aspects of a successful life through hard work and dedication.

Sports meet

Grace Matriculation Higher Secondary School celebrated Annual Sports Meet on February 14. J. Bharath Ram, school trustee, declared the sports meet open and presided over the function. Vijayendra Bidari, Superintendent of Police, the chief guest, addressed the students and distributed prizes.
