Episode seven of Gourmet Girl Graffiti, titled “Sizzle, Pop,” is currently streaming on Crunchyroll for paid members. Free members can watch the same episode six days from now on February 28th.
The episode starts off with the important “foodgasm,” which makes normal food seem very tantalizing at best. I feel that this is an example of why watching Gourmet Girl Graffiti could help give people their appetites back.
I can already see that this is a slice-of-life anime that has no direct storyline and allows the food to ultimately be the star of Gourmet Girl Graffiti. You have the main cast of characters of course, but they are nothing without the food dishes to drive the story.
Kirin’s country bumpkin personality comes out once again, which I find annoying. I do have to say that Kirin’s whiny personality is perhaps one of the core story drivers because it serves as a motivation for Machiko to cook the dishes. I cannot blame Kirin for her personality because she lives far from the city and is experiencing what Tokyo has to offer for the first time.
I find it cute that Kirin is complaining about the fall weather, which I do agree.
You would expect the fall season to be cooler, but that is not the case in certain parts of the world like Florida.
The theme of this episode is fish, with specific focus on saury aka mackerel pike.
Shiina invites Machiko and Kirin for a family cookout at her family’s home, where they have a surplus of saury that needs to be consumed before the smell attracts the cats. I laughed when Shiina insisted that she and Kirin do all the cooking.
Shiina makes a valid point that Machiko has been doing all of the cooking so far.
Kirin reminds me of the titular Index from A Certain Magical Index because Toma does all the cooking and Index does all the eating. Index has not pitched in to help Toma with the cooking at all. This is the same with Kirin as Shiina pointed out.
I laughed when Shiina bluntly accused Kirin of freeloading, which is true.
Kirin’s melodrama added to the humor. I laughed when Kirin curled up in defeat knowing that Shiina was right all along.
I wasn’t surprised that they had the help of Tsukuyo, Shiina’s personal family maid, who proceeds to educate Kirin on saury dishes. Tsukuyo surprisingly pointed out that you cannot hide mistakes in preparing saury because those dishes are “simple to make.”
Tsukuyo explains that simple and straightforward dishes can be the most difficult to make. If you mess up, it will show.
I always wondered why the Japanese ate grilled fish in this manner, which makes me glad that I watched this episode. I never knew I could learn so much about cooking certain dishes by watching an anime series.
Machiko enjoyed it, which matters, but Tsukuyo was a harsh critic. I went “holy s—t” when Tsukuyo bluntly told Kirin and Shiina that they “murdered the flavors,” cut the fish too deeply, and allowed the saury skin to burn.
Kirin and Shiina ultimately learn that making a good dish takes time and practice as Tsukuyo points out.
I find humor in the irony because of the latest episode of Fairy Tail 2 because of Natsu and Lucy’s mission to find a special ice. Happy brought fish to use as rations, but Natsu went overboard and burned them to a crisp.
They remind me of Natsu in that fashion.
It gets horrifyingly funny near the end when Tsukuyo teaches them the importance of doing the dishes and I never imagined the two of them becoming f—k ups on the first try. Kirin proves to be a kitchen’s worst nightmare because of all the plates she has broken.
The ending was funny when Machiko admitted that she failed to get rid of the saury scent off Kirin’s clothes. I am guessing they needed a different change of clothes before they prepared and cooked the saury.
This episode shows that they are still f—ked without Machiko. I am definitely in the mood for grilled fish after watching episode seven.
