Padmanabhan trained Regal Boast ran true to the form that he had displayed in his last run while claiming the 2000 metres S Rangarajan Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races in the hands of jockey Vinod Shinde. Favourite Azzurro failed to justify huge public expectations.
Azzurro who had run fourth in the Bangalore Derby was the on money favourite to land the spoils. Regal Boast`s run over an identical trip was a winning one where he had thwarted the bid of Authentic. The latter went on to finish second in the Derby ahead of Azzurro. However, the majority of punters felt that Azzurro would bounce to winning form in a handicap race which was the reason why there was substantial support for this got abroad to come good. Regal Boast had his share of supporters.
Jockey Vinod Shinde took Regal Boast to the front and stayed put there right till the end. Azzurro essayed a strong challenge in the final furlong but the front runner was unrelenting as he had a useful cushion of a few lengths leeway which saw him through. Lucia ran on from behind to finish third.
Satish Narredu trained China One who had the benefit of two race runs besides a mock race looked the fittest in the 1200 metres Katil Plate, a race for maiden three year olds. Quaker Ridge who was making her debut was also backed to win though the six furlong trip was going to prove sharp for this half sister to Indian Oaks winner Romantic Fire. In the event, China One who had a trouble passage into the straight, bounced clear inside the final 300 metres and easily held off the late flourish of Quaker Ridge. The latter did not get a clear run and was cramped for space and by the time she could get going, the faovurite had already established a winning lead. Quaker Ridge should make amends next time out. Stormont who ran on to finish third incidentally is the daughter of Indian Derby winner Starfire Girl who delivered the foal when she was 25. Starfire Girl died at the age of 27. Super Fan was one of the oldest maresat Kunigal Stud Farm at 23 when she had foaled Bangalore Derby winner Aboline.
Suleiman Attaollahi trained Schiavone had lost her previous race in controversial circumstances as there was a feeling that jockey Trevor Patel had a poor race besides ``dropping`` his whip at a crucial stage of the race. Such a belief was confirmed when the four year old filly recorded a comprehensive win in the 1400 metres K S Premchand Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Schiavone raced up front and took over the running at the top of the straight and was not pressed by any of the runners en route to her success. Secret Dimension was second ahead of The Artist who had a useful outing.
The contestants for the 1100 metres Talakaveri Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three y ear olds look pretty run of the mill. All In managed to pull it off by a whisker over long shot Humming Bird who could have won with better jockeyship than the one displayed by Jagadeesh. Forest Hills who broke loose at the Grand Stand and expended considerable energy in the process, nevertheless did well to finish third. Warren Singh had one of those three year old winners when long shot Kalinga staved off the challenge of favourite Livin` On A Prayer to win the lower division of the race. Hand of Fury made a late dash to finish third.
Magnetize shaped to record her third straight win but the front running Adriphos came up with a second win to head home in the 1400 metres Classic Story Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. As Good As It Gets made a late rally to finish third. Aravind Ganapathy trained. Prince Academy came into his own in the lower division of the race thrashing the opposition in great style.
