P Chidambaram rises to defence of expelled supporters

Chidambaram urged the AICC to intervene and take appropriate steps
Chennai: The bickering between TNCC president E.V.K.S. Elangovan and the Chidambarams went from bad to worse on Saturday after the former Union minister directly dared the his state party chief by seeking AICC’s intervention on an issue of expulsion of his six supporters from the party. In a letter handwritten by Chidambaram to rescue six of his expelled supporters, a copy of which was circulated to the media, he described the expulsion as ‘shocking’. He said, “A member cannot be expelled without seeking explanation, and holding an enquiry and sans taking the approval of the disciplinary panel.”
Further condemning the expulsion, Chidambaram urged the AICC to intervene and take appropriate steps.Though the TNCC chief and Sivagangai royalty are engaged in public mudslinging ever since Elangovan took over the state Congress leadership, this is the first time Chidambaram senior has personally raised the war flag against Elangovan who had expelled six members (Kovai Selvan, V. Thirumurthi, Kattoor Somu, A.M. Rafeeq, Srinivasan and J. Hariharan) for blocking Elangovan’s car and shouting slogans against him over his “quit” remark against their factional lords.
The war of words between them peaked when Elangovan said, “It would bode well for the Congress if a leader quits the party along with his heir,” apparently referring to the father-son duo when Jayanthi Natarajan quit the party.Curiously, the AICC repudiated Elangovan’s remark instead of reprimanding him, much to the Chidambaram’s surprise. A belligerent Elangovan who initially chose to only say, “No comments please,” on the latest face-off, subsequently said, “Neither the six expelled persons nor the two (Chidambaram and his son) are that important.” He was asked if Sonia Gandhi had enquired about the six Chidambaram supporters’ expulsion.
