Freiburg missed an opportunity to move out of the bottom three of the Bundesliga as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Hoffenheim on Saturday.

Emmanuel Hohn's opener was cancelled out by Kevin Volland as these two Baden-Wurttemberg rivals shared the spoils in the Black Forest.

Freiburg also ended the game with 10 men when Marc Torrejon picked up a straight red card in stoppage-time with more negatives than positives for Christian Streich's strugglers, who could drop a position on Sunday.

Roman Burki was the first goalkeeper to be tested when, in the 15th minute, he made an easy save from Anthony Modeste's shot from distance.

With chances at a premium, it was little surprise that a set-piece brought the opening goal.

Jonathan Schmid sent in a free-kick from the right which was met by Hohn at the far post, and he found the bottom corner from the edge of the six-yard box.

The next time the same combination tried to double Freiburg's lead, Sebastian Rudy got in before Hohn to clear, and two minutes later Hoffenheim levelled.

Modeste teed up Volland, who found the bottom corner from nearly 30 yards out with a precise and powerful effort which Burki could not reach.

Hoffenheim could have had the lead early in the second half when Roberto Firmino set up Modeste, but his control let him down.

He was unable to get a shot in when Volland pulled the ball across in the 69th minute, but Hoffenheim were starting to get on top at the Dreisamstadion.

Felix Klaus freed the hosts from the pressure a little in the 83rd minute and nearly gave them the lead, but the right-hand post denied him.

The game therefore ended all square, but not without Freiburg losing Torrejon to a straight red card after his heavy challenge on Tarik Elyounoussi.
