Maze disappoints home fans, Fenninger leads

Maribor: Slovenian ski star Tina Maze left her thousands of home fans feeling flat on Saturday as she failed to finish the first leg of the World Cup giant slalom.

The 31-year-old, who returned home with two gold medals and a silver from the world championships, lost control two gates from the finish.

She wasn`t the only top name to fail to negotiate the first leg. American superstar Lindsey Vonn fell when she was on course to record the fastest time.

Maze has enjoyed huge success on the Maribor slopes before, from her first podium finish in 2002 to three race wins and three other top three placings.

Austria`s world champion in the discipline, Anna Fenninger, recorded the fastest time on the first leg, three-hundredths of a second faster than Germany`s Viktoria Regensburg, who took silver at the world championships in Beaver Creek, Colorado.
