GUWAHATI: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Friday slammed the Centre’s decision to provide citizenship to Bangladeshi nationals. Activists of
Asom Yuva Parishad (AYP), the youth wing of AGP, also burnt an effigy of
Prime Minister Narendra Modi here in the city.
AGP leaders said the BJP government has never thought for the welfare of the state. “The party has never kept its promises when it comes to the northeast or Assam.
From mega dams to solving the illegal Bangladeshi issue, the Centre has done nothing,” said AGP president
Atul Bora.
The party vowed to continue its agitation for the people of the state. “The
Modi government has been taking anti-Assam policies since it came to power. It has been deceiving the people of the state and the region,” said AGP general secretary
Durga Das Boro.
AYP
leader Tapan Das said, “We have always said that we will not remain silent against all these deeds of the government which harm the sentiments of the state.”
The home ministry is working on rehabilitation of about 3,500 Indians now settled in enclaves in Bangladesh but plan to cross over to India once the land-swap deal is signed. A financial package for states that would accommodate about 51,000 Bangladeshis living in enclaves here is also being finalized.
