Atta Galatta, the coffee shop was started by Lakshmi and Subodh Sankar. It not only offers some great food but also an interesting selection of books. The place is known for its delicious baked goodies with some of the popular items being cinnamon rolls, lemon tarts, sandwiches and ‘masala pav’ among others.

Though it serves milkshakes and hot chocolate in various flavours, it is the fresh filter coffee that is the most sought-after. The healthy and tasty breads are made in-house and are completely fresh. Be it white bread, multi grain bread, brown bread or whole wheat bread, these along with desserts like cupcakes, pastries and brownies are relished by everyone.

Even the ambience adds to one’s experience. Be it the red walls decorated with Tanjore paintings or books lined up neatly in shelves, there is an earthy feel to the place. Says Lakshmi, “I am a student of literature while my husband Subodh is a foodie. So Atta Galatta is just a blend of our passion. We decided to serve people some good food and offer a range of interesting books for them to read.” She adds, “We want different people to meet under the same roof and share ideas.”

Atta Galatta also conducts various events, dance classes, yoga and poetry sessions, storytelling, plays and workshops. The couple says many of these suggestions are given by the customers themselves.

Says Vikram, a regular visitor, “For me, this is the place to come to for food, books and entertainment. I recently participated in a show called ‘Dancing Tales’ here which involved both dance and storytelling. The place always comes up with new concepts like this.”

Radhika, another frequent visitor, terms Atta Galatta as “a beautiful and lovely place” which she would like to visit again and again. “There is a very good selection of children’s books here which I have not seen anywhere else. The place also hosts unique events like Chinese poetry and ‘Dancing Tales’,” she notes.

The duo plans to open another branch in future though Lakshmi feels the habit of reading is on the decline. “It is challenging to run a bookstore now when not many people are into reading. But it’s something that I enjoy and I look forward to opening another branch of the shop in future,” she sums up. Atta Galatta is located at 5th Block, Koramangala. For details, call 41600677.
