Daniel Ricciardo fastest in Barcelona testing

Barcelona- Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo today edged out Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen by just 0.01 seconds to set the pace on the second day of the second pre-season test.

Ricciardo and Raikkonen headed the leaderboard as teams stopped for their hour-long lunch break at 12:00 GMT at the Circuit De Barcelona-Catalunya. Sergio Perez's Force India was third, followed by Nico Rosberg's Mercedes. It was a more encouraging morning for troubled McLaren-Honda as Fernando Alonso set the fifth fastest time.

The double world champion had a problem-free four hours' running despite a cobbled-together fix for an engine problem that ended team-mate Jenson Button's day after just 21 laps on Thursday.

Alonso surpassed Button's total to do more than 28 laps and set relatively competitive lap times, despite the engine being down on power and carrying a known problem.

Honda had warned on Thursday that the temporary fix they had put in place on the energy recovery system could well fail again on Friday. A permanent redesign of the faulty part will be ready for Saturday, when Button is back in the car.

Ricciardo's pace-setting time was the fastest of the winter at this track, beating the pace set by Lotus's Pastor Maldonado on Thursday by nearly half a second. The Australian and Raikkonen both set their quickest laps on short runs on the 'soft' tyre.

In his 2014 Force India, Perez, whose new car will not be ready until some point during next week's final test, was on the even grippier and short-lived 'super-soft'.

Both Rosberg and Alonso - 0.982secs and 1.813secs off the pace - set their best times on the medium tyre, which is about 1.2 seconds a lap slower than the soft.
