MAINZ, Germany — Two passenger trains collided in Switzerland early Friday, officials said, causing at least five injuries and several cars on one of the trains to derail.
The collision between the commuter train and fast intercity rail service happened near the town of Rafz — around 30 miles from Zurich — at around 6:45 a.m. local time (12:45 a.m. ET), a Zurich police spokesman told NBC News.
Rescue teams were on site and according to preliminary information five people were injured, at least one of them seriously, according to the spokesperson.
The track between the towns of Buelach and Schaffhausen was closed, and the website for Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) showed several services between Zurich and the German city of Stuttgart been canceled or rerouted.
