Week-long drama festival in Udupi from Sunday

Sumanasa Kodavoor is conducting a drama festival at the open air theatre at Bhujanga Park here from February 22 to 28.

The festival would be held in collaboration with the Department of Kannada and Culture and the Udupi City Municipal Council, the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and the Union Department of Culture.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, M.S. Bhat, honorary president of the organisation, said the plays would be staged at 6.30 p.m. daily during the fest.

They are: ‘Court Martial’ by Suvarna Pratishtana troupe from Mudrady, directed by Sadananda Suvarna, on February 22; ‘Naga Mandala’ (Tulu) by Rangabhumi troupe from Udupi, directed by Raviraj H.P., on February 23; ‘Ashwathama’ by Aata troupe from Mangaluru, directed by Christopher D’Souza, on February 24; a Kannada drama-Yakshagana ‘Amba Shapatha’ by Sumanasa troupe from Kodavoor, directed by Bannaje Sanjeeva Suvarna on February 25; ‘Anna Vali’ by Ranga Adhyayana Kendra from Kundapur, directed by Gururaj Marpalli on February 26; ‘Aragina Batte’ by Bhoomika troupe from Harady, directed B.S. Rama Shetty on February 27; and ‘Kasdanchi Tovodchi’ (Tulu) by Sumanasa troupe, directed by Praveen G. Kodavoor on February 28.

People had responded positively to the first two drama festivals held by the organisation the last two years, which encouraged them to hold it for the third consecutive year, Mr. Bhat said.

Seven persons would be given the Ranga Sadhaka Sanman awards during the festival — Madhavi Bhandary, P. Vasudev Rao, K.B. Rao, Bhojappa Salian, Chandrahasa Shetty, Bhaskar Kotian and Ravi M.K.

The festival would be inaugurated by Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake on February 22. Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, would preside over the inaugural function. Shobha Karandlaje, MP, would deliver the valedictory address on February 28, Mr. Bhat said.
