A week after a portion of an under-construction flyover collapsed in West Delhi’s Pitampura crushing two cars and injuring three people, the Delhi Government and the owner of one of the cars which was badly damaged have been wrangling over the make of the car that the injured party will be compensated with.

Meanwhile, a construction worker who suffered multiple fractures, including fracture of his hipbones, was given Rs. 50,000 as compensation.

Local businessman Sanjay Bhadauria and his wife were travelling in a Hyundai i10 when the block collapsed on the car’s bonnet on February 12. While medical expenses were fully covered for injuries that he and his wife suffered, officials of the Delhi Government’s Public Works Department also agreed to replace the damaged car with the latest model of a Hyundai i10. The cost of compensation would be borne by the contractor, officials said.

Officials claim that Mr. Bhadauria who initially agreed to the offer later demanded that he be given a Toyota Corolla instead.

However, when contacted by The Hindu , Mr. Bhadauria said that he did not ask for anything but was simply told that his car will be replaced by a new one.

“The contractor came and said that my car will be replaced by a new one. I asked what else compensation will be given to me,” he said.

Mr. Bhadauria admitted that his entire medical expenses were taken care of as well.

All three injured – Mr. Bhadauria, his wife, and Bechan Singh who was a construction worker – were all rushed to Jaipur Global Hospital and their medical expenses were covered entirely by the government.

Yet, Mr. Bhadauria requested to be taken to Fortis Hospital where he was admitted for two days.

“I have suffered injures on my neck and back and have been ordered to take bed rest for six months,” he claimed. His wife suffered minor injuries and was not admitted.

Officials claimed that on Thursday, Mr. Bhadauria finally agreed to accept the latest model of a Hyundai i10 but continued to demand more compensation.

He was told to file a case in court instead to seek any further compensation.
